MAY WELLNESS TIP

5/5/2020

HEALTH MINISTRYMay Wellness Tip
With the global pandemic caused by the COVID 19 virus, our world and daily norms have quickly changed.  Many of us are experiencing symptoms of excessive stress: irritability, difficulty sleeping, frequent headaches, heartburn, muscle tension, and high blood pressure.  Over time increased levels of stress can have a negative impact on our health, including our immune system.  People under chronic stress are much more susceptible to viral illnesses like the flu, the common cold, and yes, the COVID virus.  It may also take longer to get over these illnesses.

What are a few coping techniques to decrease stress and anxiety?
  1. Physical activity is a coping technique that doctors most recommend for reducing stress.  Exercise allows the body to release endorphins, the “feel good” hormones. Not only does physical activity relieve stress, it also improves overall health by strengthening muscle and bones, reducing blood pressure, elevating “good” cholesterol, and increasing energy. For some free online workouts visit Verywellfit.com. There is a large selection of workouts to choose from.
  2. As we try to manage stress, some of us turn to food.  Depending on the path you choose, this can be good or not so good.  By consistently choosing processed foods such as cookies, candy, sugary drinks, and chips your blood sugar will spike and then crash, causing more stress and anxiety.  On the other hand, if you maintain a healthier diet that provides the right blend of nutrients, you can offset the impact of stress by strengthening your immune system, balancing your moods, and lowering your blood pressure Stress and anxiety can cause an increase in the cortisol level, which can lead to food cravings.  Make is a habit choose those food that are good for you, giving you the edge in effectively managing stress and anxiety.
  3. Finally, humor is a powerful way to lighten your burdens, inspire hope, and ease anxiety and stress. Science tells us that laughter has a positive effect o both mental health and the immune system. Here are some reasons why.
    • When we laugh our body releases endorphins, which increase feelings of happiness and well-being.
    • Laughter boosts our heart rate while producing antibodies that strengthen the immune system.
    • Blood vessel function improves, increasing blood flow, which promotes cardiovascular health.
    • Laughing burns calories.  Studies show laughing for 10-20 minutes burns 10-40 calories.
Watch a funny movie, share a funny story with a friend, find humor in everyday things. Take a few minutes to view a short video on YouTube called “10 Health Benefits of Laughter.”

It is important now, more than ever to invest in yourself to manage stress and anxiety.

The health ministry is available to answer question concerning COVID19.  Take care and stay safe.
Blessings to you all.
