 Community Outreach

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.
1 Peter 4:10

Brotherhood of St. Lawrence

The Brotherhood of St. Lawrence is a group of men who enjoy cooking (indoors and out), fellowship, and service to the church and community.

The group meets informally and periodically for fun and fellowship. They organize and host two significant fundraising events each year—the Mardi Gras party at St. Augustine’s, at which they prepare a full-fledged Cajun meal and a grilled feast at the Canterbury Faire in the fall.

In addition, the group often serves special meals at the church, such as the Easter breakfast and the Chili Cook-off held during our annual meeting.

All of these efforts enable the Brotherhood to provide a number of service activities throughout the year, including a hamburger/hot dog party at The Harbor, a home for the mentally impaired, meals for the Salvation Army shelter and the Jesus House, food baskets for needy families at Thanksgiving, and a Grocery Giveaway during the Christmas season.

This ministry is open to all men of the congregation who enjoy fellowship, cooking, grilling, and maybe an occasional beer.

If you would like more information about this ministry, please email Brotherhood@sac-okc.org

Episcopal Church Women

All women of St. Augustine’s are members of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW). The group meets once a month to discuss topics of general interest and plan for upcoming outreach events.
The ECW outreach activities and efforts include:

  • Monthly delivery of personal and grooming items and gift cards to the women residing at the Jesus House;
  • The Jesus House Christmas backpack drive;
  • The annual Diaper and Formula drive for the Infant Crisis Services Center; and
  • Other activities as the need arises.

The ECW also hosts the annual St. Augustine’s Canterbury Faire, a craft and food festival that provides funding for many of the ECW’s outreach projects.

More help supporting the ECW ministries is always appreciated. If you are interested in participating in some or all of the ECW activities, please contact ECW to have your name added to the news/announcements distribution list.

If you would like more information about this ministry, please email ECW@sac-okc.org

The Harbor Ministry

Members of St. Augustine’s have ministered to The Harbor, a home for approximately 100 mentally impaired adults, for more than a decade. Deacon Robby Trammell and others from St. Augustine’s assist with a 1:00 p.m. prayer and praise service on the first Sunday of each month. The service includes Holy Communion from the reserve sacrament as well as anointing and prayers for healing. The service is frequently followed by a fellowship/snack time. St. Augustine’s members also support the residents of The Harbor with contributions of various supplies such as shoes and socks, bedding and cash contributions for Christmas gifts, food and other necessities. The Brotherhood of St. Lawrence also organizes cookouts for the residents. The Harbor is located at 4100 Newport Avenue in Oklahoma City. For more information about this ministry please contact TheHarbor@sac-okc.org.

Guild of St. George

Picture
The Guild of St. George is an assistance outreach project to meet the critical needs of those who live at the edge of poverty in our community. The Guild provides food, help with utilities, bus tokens, deposits for public housing, and assistance with prescriptions.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon, members of St. Augustine’s provide several volunteers to this organization to help with a variety of activities including:
  • Bagging groceries;
  • Interviewing clients;
  • Answering phones;
  • Computer input;
  • Record-keeping.
Every Thursday, other volunteers help unload food delivered by the Regional Food Bank to restock the pantry shelves.This is a very hands-on, rewarding ministry for the volunteers. The Guild of St. George is located adjacent to St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, at 117 NW 7th Street, downtown Oklahoma City. If you would like more information about this ministry, please email Guild@sac-okc.org

Jesus House Ministry

The mission of the Jesus House, and its faith-based programs, is “to transform lives impacted by mental illness, homelessness, and addiction by providing a place for wellness, recovery, spiritual growth, and a meaningful future.” St. Augustine’s ministers to the men and women seeking recovery at the Jesus House—located at 1335 West Sheridan in downtown Oklahoma City—by offering a worship service at 1:00 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month, often followed by a fellowship/snack time. A special service of foot washing on Maundy Thursday has also become an annual event. A number of other services are provided to the Jesus House in conjunction with other St. Augustine’s ministries, such as Thanksgiving food baskets provided through the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence, women’s personal items and toiletries provided each spring by the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), and periodic meals provided by the Brotherhood and served with parish-wide volunteers. St. Augustine’s also contributes financially to augment the donations and volunteer efforts of our members. Please contact JesusHouse@sac-okc.org for more information or to volunteer.

Kairos Prison Ministry

I was in prison and you visited me.
Matthew 25:36
The mission of the Kairos Prison Ministry is “to share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts and lives of incarcerated men, women and youth, as well as their families, to become loving and productive citizens of their communities.”

Volunteers from St. Augustine’s assist with Kairos’ periodic four-day spiritual retreats designed to help inmates develop a relationship with Christ and a Christian relationship with each other. Each day of the retreat builds on the previous day and peaks with a forgiveness ceremony and a session for accountability planning.

St. Augustine’s Kairos efforts are focused on inmates at the Davis Correctional Facility in Holdenville, Oklahoma.

Volunteers for this ministry can assist in different ways:
  • Baking cookies and assembling other materials needed for a Kairos retreat;
  • Offering daily prayers for the retreat participants;
  • Financial assistance; and/or
  • Becoming a trained Kairos team member to assist with the program within the prison walls.

If you have an interest in learning more about Kairos, please contact Kairos@sac-okc.org
